“South Africa’s Mozart” – Nelson Mandela
In the last year, jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim was named a 2019 NEA Jazz Master; released a critically acclaimed album, The Balance; and embarked on a world tour. His indefatigable spirit, however, is nothing new. He wasn’t deterred when his first album—released under the name Dollar Brand in apartheid-era South Africa, his home country—was censured by the government. Instead, oppression fueled his artistry; he became a hero to the anti-apartheid movement and later played during Nelson Mandela’s inauguration. Join us in welcoming Ibrahim and his band Ekaya and hear a true “modern master—steeped in blues, with a classicist’s touch and poet’s sense of phrasing” (The Wall Street Journal).
