Layale Chaker + Sarafand
Overview
Layale Chaker, violin
Jake Charkey, cello
Sam Minaie, bass
Phillip Golub, piano
John Hadfield, drums
Born in Paris and raised in Lebanon, composer and violinist Layale Chaker has been speaking multiple languages–linguistically and musically–since her youth. The 2020-22 Jerome Hill Fellow challenges stereotypes about Arabic music with her unique sonic style: a beguiling blend of classical contemporary music, jazz, Arabic maqam scales, and improvisation. The composer of the opera Ruinous Gods—which makes its world premiere at Spoleto this season—Chaker and her ensemble, Sarafand, take center stage for four performances of two different programs.
Attendance at all events is subject to the Festival security policy.
