Monday, May 13, 6:00pm — Ruinous Gods Discussion
Ahead of the world premiere of Ruinous Gods at Spoleto on May 24, Festival General Director & CEO Mena Mark Hanna and Ruinous Gods librettist Lisa Schlesinger discuss the major themes of the opera—the global refugee crisis and its impact on families, children, and our future.
Monday, May 20, 6:00pm — Behind Tell Your Story
Spoleto Festival USA artists Renate Rohlfing and Edward Kass discuss Tell Your Story, a creative engagement project that amplifies underrepresented voices in Charleston through sonic memoirs. Pairing emerging composers from the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra with community members, together they create new compositions inspired by the community’s stories to premiere at the Festival. The public performance of Tell Your Story takes place on May 22 at 7:00pm at Festival Hall and is free to the public.
Friday, June 7, 2:00pm — Jazz Talks with Pedrito Martinez
Spoleto Festival USA Jazz Curator Larry Blumenfeld talks with Afro-Cuban jazz superstar Pedrito Martinez. The GRAMMY-winning percussionist, who has taken the stage with musical legends such as Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, and Wynton Marsalis, will share stories of his Cuban roots and their influence on his cutting-edge style.
