Volunteer Ushers

Spoleto Festival USA relies on its 250+ dedicated volunteer ushers to ensure the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of all Festival patrons. Check out the responsibilities and requirements for the role below. If you think you’d be a good fit, please fill out the Usher Interest Survey here or below. The deadline to complete the Usher Interest Survey is Thursday, March 19 at 5:00 PM. 

Core Responsibilities 

  • Maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all patrons, focusing on efficient seating, accessibility assistance, and resolution of any issues. 
  • Ensure patrons are ticketed correctly by both visually checking tickets and scanning tickets using the provided ticket scanners. 
  • Familiarize yourself with venue seating charts, location of restrooms and exits, accessibility features, and egress pathways. 
  • Understand and politely enforce all Spoleto Festival policies.  
  • Inspect public areas to ensure safe conditions and cleanliness, notify a House Manager of problems.  
  • Remain calm and assist House Managers in the event of an emergency.  

General Requirements 

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.  
  • Must be able to pass and maintain a clear background check.  
  • Possess exceptional customer service skills with a proactive, patron-centered approach.  
  • Participate in annual usher orientation and training sessions.  
  • Be well groomed and adhere to a dress code.  
  • Read and interpret tickets (digital and printed) in a dimly lit environment. 
  • Utilize technology including email, volunteer scheduling website (Better Impact), and ticket scanners.  
  • Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, ascending/descending stairs (sometimes dimly lit), lifting of up to 25 lbs., and working in indoor and outdoor environments.  
  • Regularly exposed to crowds and potentially high volumes of noise. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an equitable, accessible, and inclusive environment for all staff, clients, guests, vendors, and communities.

  • One complimentary performance ticket for every three shifts worked.
