Scottish Ballet’s newest creation, Mary, Queen of Scots, arrived at Spoleto Festival USA 2026 as “a bold and innovative feast for the senses,” as The Post and Courier praised. The production made its U.S. premiere at the Charleston Gaillard Center on May 28, running through May 30 before traveling to New York for its Lincoln Center debut, June 4–7.
This sweeping dance‑theater work explores the complex and combustible relationship between Mary, Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth I of England — two rulers whose rivalry shaped an era. As choreographer and co‑creator Sophie Laplane’s first full‑length narrative ballet, the piece blends classical technique with a contemporary edge. Directed and co‑created by James Bonas, the production features an original score by Mikael Karlsson and Michael P. Atkinson, performed live by the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra. Soutra Gilmour’s set and costume designs frame the drama with striking visual clarity, and guest artist Charlotta Öfverholm leaves a powerful impression as the soon‑to‑die Elizabeth.

A returning festival favorite, Scottish Ballet first appeared at Spoleto Festival USA in 1986 with La Sylphide and Othello and most recently brought The Crucible in 2023. Festival CEO and General Director Mena Mark Hanna invited the company back with Mary, Queen of Scots after attending its world premiere at the 2025 Edinburgh International Festival.
The U.S. premiere drew wide critical acclaim: Broadway World called it an “artistic pinnacle,” while Classical Voice North America praised the production as “boundary‑pushing,” “bold,” and “gripping.” The Post and Courier highlighted the original score played by the Festival Orchestra as “sublime” and “giving this unique work a more-than cinematic feel that is truly a stronghold in the production.”
