Tyshawn Sorey, For Orchestra

Venue: College of Charleston Sottile Theater

Duration: Approximately 1 hour, 45 minutes

“A composer of radical and seemingly boundless ideas” (The Wall Street Journal), Tyshawn Sorey’s genius transcends tidy musical boxes. Two nights after the jazz trio concert, the composer’s daring work in the classical sphere is showcased by members of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra. Among the evening’s selections, hear cellist Seth Parker Woods in For Roscoe Mitchell, a serene piece for cello and orchestra written with Woods, as well as Sorey’s Autoschediasms, which Sorey and the orchestra craft—in real time—using spontaneous composition.
