Produced by Jason Moran and Alicia Hall Moran
Cultures in motion
In the years between 1910 and 1970, America saw one of its greatest shifts in population: a passage of roughly six million African Americans from the rural South to points north and west. For this multifaceted concert, pianist and MacArthur Fellow Jason Moran and famed mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran delve into their families’ personal journeys as well as stories from this historic movement, weaving together music that spans classical and jazz to spirituals, rhythm and blues, and beyond. Guest artists include filmmaker and writer Julie Dash; singer, composer, and instrumentalist Toshi Reagon; and Grammy-nominated wind quintet Imani Winds coming together to celebrate the indelible and diverse creativity of African American communities in cities nationwide.
