POWER
Kinesthetic anthropology
When you imagine Shakers in the 1800s, what comes to mind? With POWER, celebrated choreographer Reggie Wilson conjures some surprising truths—including the existence of Black Shaker communities led by women. With a varied soundtrack spanning The Staple Singers to Meredith Monk to Bessie Jones and the Georgia Sea Island Singers, Power is an entrancing look at Shaker worship practices and those of the African diaspora, all examined through Wilson’s “post-African/neo-HooDoo modern dance” lens.
