Music by Luca Francesconi
Conducted by John Kennedy
Directed by John Fulljames
The two principal characters from Les Liaisons dangereuses are trapped in a bitter game of seduction and deception in Francesconi’s opera, based on Heiner Müller’s 1982 play. This Royal Opera production of Quartett brings together all the ingredients of great opera—love, hatred, and demise. Acclaimed composer Luca Francesconi’s score (commissioned by La Scala, Milan, in 2011) calls for two singers and two orchestras—one live, and one pre-recorded and electronically treated—and is conducted in these performances by Festival Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy. John Fulljames’s production presents a fully immersive experience that has enraptured audiences with its dark comedy and passion, in an 18th-century game of love played out in an apocalyptic future.
Contains material of an adult nature.
