Featuring Dr. Michael White and Catherine Russell
A star-studded tribute to the life and music of Danny Barker
Guitarist and banjoist Danny Barker may have played with the best (from Jelly Roll Morton and Cab Calloway to Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker), but this jazz raconteur was much more than a sideman. Largely responsible for a resurgence in the New Orleans brass-band tradition in the 1970s, Barker served as a mentor to such top young talents as Wynton Marsalis and laid the groundwork for jazz generations to come. For one spectacular evening, an eight-piece all-star band—led by clarinet virtuoso Dr. Michael White and complete with horns, percussion, and featured vocalist Catherine Russell—gathers in the Cistern Yard to celebrate the life and achievements of a true Crescent City luminary.
