MAHLER 4 AND DREAMING

Sponsored by: South State Bank

Venue: Charleston Gaillard Center

Duration: Approximately 1 hour, 30 minutes

Overview

Conducted by John Kennedy

John Kennedy leads the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra in Gustav Mahler’s beatific Symphony no. 4, a yearning for a peaceful life on earth with his setting of the poem “Das himmlische Leben”—“The Heavenly Life.” Soprano Pureum Jo, who sang the title role in the opera Matsukaze at the 2013 Festival, returns as soloist. Also on the program is the US-premiere performance of Dreaming by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir, which won the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2012. The committee had this to say about the work: “Dreaming opens the sphere of the symphony orchestra in an unusual and innovative way. The music behaves like a shifting landscape, bringing an experience of chronological time to halt—like in dreams.”
