Nothing can quite prepare listeners for the visceral intensity and genre-obliterating virtuosity of an evening with Cécile McLorin Salvant. Marking her third Spoleto Festival USA appearance on the heels of a MacArthur Fellowship and two Grammy wins since her last visit, the jazz vocalist arrives in Charleston to present her newest album, Ghost Song. It’s rich with texture and unexpected instrumentation—perfect complements to her “singularly arresting voice” (The Wall Street Journal).
A Little More…
Cécile is a composer, singer, and visual artist. Salvant won the Thelonious Monk competition in 2010 and has received Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Albums on three consecutive releases—The Window, Dreams and Daggers, and For One to Love. A decade later, Salvant received the MacArthur fellowship and the Doris Duke Artist Award.
Her latest album Ghost Song was released on March 4, 2022, to critical acclaim. The album which will be performed at Spoleto features a diverse mix of seven originals and five interpretations on the themes of ghosts, nostalgia, and yearning.
“I wanted the album to be a circle, with the sean-nós reference at the beginning and at the end. So it is the first track but it’s also the last track and it’s also the middle track, which is how I listen to music, walking around my neighborhood, on a plane, traveling somewhere, putting stuff on repeat.” (© 2022 Nonesuch Records)
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, of a French mother and Haitian father, she started classical piano studies at 5, sang in a children’s choir at 8, and started classical voice lessons as a teenager. Salvant received a bachelor’s degree in French law from the Université Pierre-Mendes France in Grenoble while also studying baroque music and jazz at the Darius Milhaud Music Conservatory in Aix-en-Provence, France.
