WHERE

Emmett Robinson Theatre at College of Charleston

WHY

Nouveau circus has been one of the Festival’s best-selling genres in recent years—no doubt because of the astonishment audiences feel when they see what the human body is capable of combined with the transcendent beauty with which these feats are achieved—all cast in a playful atmosphere. What a trifecta! A Simple Space is creative and raw, not relying on equipment or the accoutrements of a circus tent, but physicality and showmanship to create an unforgettable experience.

ASimpleSpace1STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Tasha Gandy, Director of Finance

For A Simple Space, the traditional seating arrangement for the Emmett Robinson Theater has been turned on its head.  The Robinson is a small, intimate theater on the College of Charleston campus and normally seats a little over 300.  But that wasn’t intimate enough for the physical wizards of A Simple Space.  They wanted the audience members to be able to reach out and touch the action, so the stage has been arranged to bring about half the seats up on stage with the acrobats.
