Festival Friday Radio is a new weekly blog series in which we will share playlists for your listening pleasure. While you wait for the 2017 Festival to begin, tune in every Friday to hear these hand selected lists that will include top 10 songs by 2017 Spoleto Festival USA musicians, or an exclusive artist curated playlist.
For one night only, the enchanting, live oaks that canopy the College of Charleston Cistern Yard will be flooded with the energetic sounds of, Della Mae, an all-female Americana-meets-bluegrass band from Boston. This five-piece string band—now based in Nashville—blurs the lines between folk, soul, and old-time traditions to create their own spirited sound—CLICK HERE for tickets for their June 2 Festival performance.
In addition to receiving an IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Award) and a Grammy nomination for best bluegrass album, Della Mae has traveled the world as cultural ambassadors in the U.S. State Department’s American Music Abroad program. This versatile band draws from their experiences abroad and their American roots influences to create a distinct sound that seamlessly fuses poignant lyrics about heartache and the working-class blues with upbeat, country spirit.
Press play, get your toe tapping, and sing along to the swooping harmonies of Della Mae’s top 10 tracks. Fiddle player and vocalist, Kimber Ludiker suggests starting with “Boston Town,” “Rude Awakening,” and “Shambles.”
