On May 26, Grammy award-winning vocalist Dianne Reeves will join renowned drummer Terri Lyne Carrington for a Spoleto Festival USA performance featuring works by female jazz composers that span eras, geographical borders, and genres — from blues to bebop and beyond. But it’s not her first time at the Festival, Reeves is making her sixth Spoleto appearance – and for good reason.
After attending Reeves’ most recent Festival performance in 2015 at the Cistern Yard, a reviewer for The Charleston City Paper wrote “Reeves and her band are among the finest musicians in the world, yet they bring such a humility and relaxed comfort to the stage that it actually feels like you’re in their backyard hanging out with friends.”
A contributor to The Post and Courier wrote, “When Reeves descended the Cistern stage, and her band followed, her blues had left the audience anything but blue.”
It seems Reeves has as much admiration for Spoleto as audiences have for her. Ahead of her 2011 performance at the Charleston Gaillard, she told the Charleston City Paper “I love Charleston, and I love this festival. It supports the idea of music without boundaries.”
Reeves also performed at Spoleto Festival’s in 2005, 2002, and 2000.
