There is still over a week left in the 2015 Spoleto Festival USA season, which means there is still time to catch plenty of shows! During the second half of the Festival, there are two dance companies visiting from New York City with diverse backgrounds and styles: Trisha Brown Dance Company and Shen Wei Dance Arts.

Trisha Brown Dance Company has traveled the world celebrating their recently retired Founding Artistic Director and Choreographer Trisha Brown. Trisha Brown is dedicated to the exploration of perception and expression of natural movement through dance. In the 1960’s Trisha Brown began to present choreography that seemed to defy gravity through the use of harnesses. Dancers were able to walk up, down, and across walls giving the audience an incredibly unique perspective. Although she no longer choreographs for the company, the company continues to celebrate and honor their namesake by presenting and teaching her dances worldwide. During the Festival, Trisha Brown Dance Company will present four pieces from their repertoire: Set and Reset, If you couldn’t see me, Rogues, and PRESENT TENSE

“Works by Brown don’t just challenge our perceptions; they expand our minds and untether our spirits.” – The Village Voice

A common thread among some of this year’s Festival acts is the fusion of Eastern and Western forms of art. Shen Wei Dance Arts is a reflection of this idea, presenting choreography inspired by Chinese, European, and Western cultures. The company blends these very different cultural customs and mediums by using a combination of physical art and the human body. In some pieces, dancers act as paintbrushes and create pieces of art with their bodies. In others, they dance in front of enormous painted backdrops. Shen Wei, the company’s founder, has been heralded as a “genius” by The Washington Times. His goal is to “capture and focus on moments of transference… to reveal the journey of dance-making and art-making.” During the Festival, Shen Wei Dance Arts will perform two pieces: Map and Untitled #12-2. Both pieces were originally created to be performed in a museum due to their backdrops consisting of large abstract artworks painted by Shen Wei himself.
