BEETHOVEN TRANSFORMED

Sponsored By: South Carolina Bank and Trust

Venue: College of Charleston Sottile Theatre

Duration: Approximately 1 hour, 45 minutes

Overview

“How blessed are we to have John Kennedy—arguably America’s most distinguished new music guru—among us here at Spoleto.” —Charleston City Paper

Beethoven’s Symphony no. 7 is often regarded as one of his most enduring and exquisite works, exerting incredible power, sheer joy, and a sense of the sublime. Led by Spoleto Festival USA Resident Conductor and Director of Orchestral Activities John Kennedy, the Festival Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s 7th as well as two American Premieres of imaginative and daring homages to Beethoven written by contemporary composers. Louis Andriessen’s The Nine Symphonies of Beethoven is a madcap mashup that confronts how we value and regard art in a culture of short attention spans; Michael Gordon’s Rewriting Beethoven’s 7th Symphony is an astonishing and poignant transformation of Beethoven’s extraordinary music.
